What you'll learn

Run the 5 checks before you trust any metric

Small n, novelty effects, segment fishing, Simpson's paradox, seasonality.

Tell a real movement from a chart artefact in 5 minutes

Three live examples from real product data, including one drop that looked like 12% and turned out to be nothing.

Let AI run the checks for you, without inventing numbers

The prompt that takes your Amplitude/Mixpanel export and runs all five checks.

Why this topic matters

Metrics move all the time but not all that movement is meaningful. Most product decisions get made on a movement that wasn't real: a small segment, a launch-week spike, a cut that only looked interesting because you tried twenty. Amplitude and Mixpanel will happily draw the chart no matter what. I lead product analytics and UX research and have an MSc in Statistics, which mostly means I know how easy it is to fool yourself with a dashboard.

Principal UX, Product Insights · 17 yrs B2B SaaS · PhD

I lead UX research and product analytics at Aize, an industrial digital-twin platform used by engineers to make expensive decisions. I'm the person who answers "how do you know?" every week, with the dashboard and the interviews both on the table.

For most of my 17 years in B2B SaaS those two lived in different rooms. Analytics said what moved, research said what it meant, and connecting them was a weekend job. AI made it easier and faster, and I've run the combined loop on a live product ever since.

I have a PhD in behavioural science and an MSc in Statistics, which mostly means I know how easy it is to fool yourself with either kind of data alone. I also write Built & Measured, a weekly newsletter for product people who want the full picture.
